Description

Conflict in the Inotican union is a group-oriented analog simulation game that allows participants to analyse the contrast between different values, both personal, and civil society level. It helps understanding the institutional architecture of an association of national states (such as
the European Union) whose values can be the basis both of the union and of a potential source of conflict.

The game simulates a court case and political conflict in the Inotican Union: A member state, Suavia, banned a critical online magazine, claiming it violated personal rights. Others argue this violates freedom of the press, a core value of the Union. The case is brought before the Union’s Court of Justice, which must decide whether Suavia broke Union law.

For the session, you need to prepare the room so that its layout resembles that of a courtroom;
the judges are seated in front while the other tables are arranged in a U-shape opposite. Then, explain the instructions and how the game will proceed. Players are divided into roles e.g., judges, Suavia, other countries, NGOs, and citizens, and they have different goals. The session follows a structured hearing process with an introduction and presentation of the case, opening statements, open debate and negotiation, and a final decision.
