Description
World café is a method used for brainstorming multiple ideas. Four to five participants sit around a table to discuss and ideate around a topic for 4 to 20 minutes. Then they switch table with a different topic, so a single person stays at the table explaining the ideas from the discussion.
WorkAdventure is a browser-based service and a mobile app offering users customizable virtual 2D space and avatar. In a virtual office users can have video conferences, chat and connect the space to many other applications such as Google and Microsoft services.
We fused WorkAdventure with World Cafe method.

Case Description
Finnish Red Cross (FRC) had few cases where they needed new ideas. Workshop worked best for them remotely, so this was a good opportunity to test WorkAdventure. At the same time, we also gathered for a master’s thesis topic, a perfect method for youth organization for a student in GameIN project.
First, FRC wanted to brainstorm a quick gamified method for an upcoming youth event to promote FRC in a playful manner. Second, as we have extensive mapping of gamified methods, we wanted to introduce some of them to FRC members and brainstorm gaming ideas for their Discord channel. Third, our master’s thesis student needed data for his thesis. For brainstorming, we prepared 3 rooms where 2 FRC executives and 1 master’s thesis student hosted a brainstorming in World Cafe style. (see picture 1).
All participants joined the WorkAdventure platform with their devices. Some of them used mobile devices and others PC. However, mobile device users had difficulties with audio and moving their avatars. Likely, this was due to them joining through browser and not using WorkAdventure app, since PC users didn’t have same problems.
Method Usage
We started the workshop by meeting around a large table in the virtual office by introducing the GameIN project and presenting a few gamified methods on a slideshow we prepared beforehand. WorkAdventure lets you video call by creating meeting areas. You can place the areas in your virtual office wherever. When an avatar is on top of a meeting area, he/she joins a meeting, a window slides on the side of screen, and from this point on the experience is like other major video calling services.
After introducing the gamified methods, we instructed everyone to start World Cafe activity in the rooms. In each room a host facilitated brainstorming on their topics for 15 minutes while writing ideas on a shared notepad. After the time passed, we sent a global message in chat informing participants they can change rooms. We repeated this 3 times and asked everyone in the chat to come back to the starting table to start the wrap up. We visited each room where the host presented brainstorming results. In the end, participants gave feedback on WorkAdveture via MS Forms, which they accessed by clicking a laptop prop in the virtual office.

“The only issue was that WorkAdventure (browser version) was not as easy to operate with a phone as it was with a computer. …but this issue might be a nonissue when using an app-version. Everything else worked perfectly.”
Character moving stopped working when changing between browser tabs. One participant had trouble allowing the use of mic and camera, and other had problems with audio and video.
When editing virtual office space, it’s cumbersome to import your own props. Props must be in picture format you cannot even resize in the platform.
Few times props my added props disappeared overnight.
Suggestions & tips
Currently WorkAdventure works poorly on mobile devices on a browser. If you want to use it with mobile device, we suggest trying the app.
